Something She'd Only Imagined

October 23, 2026

The invitation had come through the club's message board, typed in that careful, deliberate way that experienced couples use: Looking for a bi-curious or bi female for a low-pressure evening. Husband is hands-off unless invited. Chemistry first, everything else second.

Renata had read it three times before she showed it to Greg.

She was 37. She had been thinking about this — quietly, privately, without quite naming it — for most of her adult life.

They met Simone and Derek for drinks first, which was standard, but with this particular question hanging in the air it felt like something more. Simone was 41, Brazilian-American, with close-cropped natural hair and an unhurried way of moving that made Renata feel both relaxed and acutely aware of her own body. Derek was warm and easy, the kind of man who knew when to talk and when to let his wife take the floor. He and Greg drifted into easy conversation about baseball while Simone leaned across the small table and said, softly, 'You're nervous.'

'Is it that obvious?'

'It's sweet.' Simone's smile was genuine, not predatory. 'Tell me what you're thinking about. If you want.'

What Renata was thinking about was complicated and simple at the same time. She was thinking about the specific shape of Simone's collarbone above the neckline of her dress. She was thinking about all the years she'd brushed these thoughts aside, told herself it was just abstract curiosity, nothing she needed to do anything about. She was thinking that Greg had looked at her — when she'd shown him the listing — with a kind of careful, generous encouragement that she hadn't expected and that had made her love him in a new way.

'I'm thinking I've waited a long time,' she said.

Simone reached across the table and covered her hand. 'Then let's not wait any longer.'

The room was a suite — Simone and Derek's usual arrangement for evenings like this, deliberately comfortable, deliberately unhurried. Derek poured wine, put on music at low volume, and then settled into the armchair in the corner where Greg joined him, both of them content to be witnesses, at least for now.

Renata stood near the window. She was aware of the city lights behind her, the warm ambient glow of the suite's lamps, and Simone crossing the room toward her with an ease that Renata envied and wanted to absorb.

'We go at whatever pace you want,' Simone said. 'And we stop whenever you want. No explanations needed.'

'I know.' Renata exhaled. 'I just want to actually do this instead of overthinking it.'

Simone laughed — a low, real sound — and stepped close enough that Renata could smell her perfume, something with sandalwood in it. 'Then come here.'

The first kiss was gentle and strange and immediately, unmistakably right. Softer than kissing Greg, not because it lacked intention but because the whole texture of it was different — the absence of stubble, the different weight of a woman's mouth, the way Simone's hand came up to her jaw with careful, knowing precision. Renata made a sound she hadn't planned to make.

'Yeah?' Simone murmured against her lips.

'Yeah,' Renata managed.

They moved to the bed in increments, unhurried. Simone was deliberate in a way that felt almost instructive — she'd pause to ask or to watch Renata's expression, checking in without making it clinical, adjusting without being asked. When she slid the straps of Renata's dress off her shoulders, she did it slowly, like she had all night, and the patience of it was its own particular thing.

Renata had been with Greg for nine years. She knew her own body reasonably well. But there was something disorienting, in the best way, about being touched by someone who understood the specific geography of the experience from the inside — where to be gentle, where to apply more pressure, how to read the particular signals that Renata hadn't known she was broadcasting. She found herself gripping the bedspread, then Simone's shoulders, then the back of her neck.

'You're good at this,' Renata said at some point, slightly breathless.

'You make it easy.' Simone looked up at her. 'How are you doing?'

'I'm doing extremely well.'

From the armchair, Greg's voice: 'Agreed.'

Both women laughed, which broke the intensity just enough to make it sustainable. Renata looked over at him — he was leaning forward, forearms on his knees, his expression a combination of turned-on and unmistakably proud of her, which she hadn't expected to find as affecting as it did. Derek had his hand on Greg's shoulder, a small gesture of camaraderie between the two of them.

'You can come over here,' Renata told Greg.

He did.

The four of them found a comfortable arrangement eventually, the kind that takes a bit of negotiation and small laughs and one awkward moment where someone's elbow ended up in the wrong place, which made everyone laugh again. Derek was attentive and skilled and let Renata set the terms of how much she wanted from him. Greg stayed close to Renata in a way that felt like support rather than oversight.

But the thing Renata kept returning to, even as the evening expanded and shifted, was the specific attention of Simone's hands and mouth — the intimacy of being seen and touched by a woman who knew exactly what she was doing and wasn't in any hurry to stop.

Afterward, they lay tangled and comfortable while the city went on outside without them. Renata stared at the ceiling and felt something loosen in her chest — something she'd been holding contracted for longer than she could name.

'Well?' Greg said quietly, beside her.

'You know how you spend years telling yourself something doesn't matter that much,' Renata said, 'and then you find out it actually did?'

He turned his head toward her. 'Yeah.'

'Like that,' she said.

Simone, half-asleep on Renata's other side, reached over without opening her eyes and squeezed her hand.
