Renee had always known Marcus liked to watch.
She figured it out two years into their marriage, long before the lifestyle. The way he positioned their bodies near the mirror, the way he slowed everything down when they had the curtains open a crack. He was deliberate.
So when their friends Jonah and Delia suggested a weekend at a lake house rental, Renee asked Marcus on the drive up: Are we on the same page about what might happen?
He kept his eyes on the road. Tell me what page you're on.
The page where we see what develops.
He smiled that quiet smile. Same page.
The house was right. Pine floors, high ceilings, a great room open enough to feel like a stage. Delia, 37, poured wine and made them laugh for two hours at dinner. She was compact and easy in her body. Jonah, 41, was quieter, watchful in a way that reminded Renee of Marcus.
After dinner Delia put on music and suggested they move to the living room. The couch arrangement meant the two couples faced each other.
Marcus sat beside her. His hand moved to her knee. Not high. Just present.
Delia leaned across and kissed Renee. It was a good kiss, unhurried, with real intent. Renee tasted wine on her lips and felt her shoulders drop. She kissed back.
When they broke apart, Renee looked at Marcus.
He was watching her. Not Delia. Her. That look, focused and attentive, moved through her like a current.
They found their way to the open floor. Jonah pulled Delia back against him. Marcus undressed Renee slowly, unzipping her dress at the back, pressing his mouth to her spine. She was aware of Delia watching.
You're stunning, Delia said quietly.
Marcus pulled her back to him, his chest warm against her shoulder blades. His hands moved down her stomach and she let her head fall back. She was still watching Jonah and Delia across the room and the watching and being-watched amplified everything.
Tell me what you see, Marcus murmured.
She's beautiful. He knows exactly what he's doing.
So do you.
She turned and kissed him hard and he walked her back until she sat in the armchair and he knelt.
Afterward they lay on separate rugs, loosely tangled with their own partners. Delia had her head on Jonah's chest. Renee was draped across Marcus's shoulder.
First time with voyeur play? Delia asked.
First time framing it that way, Renee said.
Jonah laughed softly. There's something about watching someone you love be fully themselves.
Marcus pressed his lips to Renee's hair. She felt the small yes in it.
She understood something she hadn't had words for before: that being seen, truly seen, was its own kind of intimacy. That Marcus watching her wasn't possession. It was witness.
She'd show him more. Whatever he wanted to watch.
